Bishop Elias Lorenzo

In 1995, Bishop Elias Lorenzo became prior at St. Mary’s Abbey, and later in 2009, took on the same role at the Primatial Abbey of Sant'Anselmo in Rome. He was then appointed procurator general of the Order of Saint Benedict, serving Benedictine communities worldwide. In 2016, he was elected abbot president of the American-Cassinese Congregation, focusing on North American monastic leadership.

Bishop Elias Lorenzo: Bishop Elias Lorenzo was born in Brooklyn in October 1960 and raised in Sunset Park. His early education began at St. Agatha Parish Elementary School and continued at Cathedral Preparatory School and Seminary. These formative years introduced him to a structured routine of study and prayer, nurturing a lasting commitment to service and education. His natural curiosity and love for learning shaped his path forward. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Don Bosco College and later joined St. Mary’s Abbey in Morris Township, where he made his first monastic vows in March 1985. He was ordained a priest in 1989, beginning a life dedicated to ministry and education. As a young monk, he taught at Delbarton School in Morristown and took on responsibilities such as directing campus ministry and organizing student retreats. Over time, he became the school's vice president and continued teaching, remaining closely connected with both students and faculty. His academic journey included a Master of Liturgical Theology from St. John’s University in Collegeville and a Master of Education in Counseling Psychology from Seton Hall University.
